A lantern-making workshop with a twist.
During the Hong Kong Lantern Festival, children go out at night carrying intricately designed paper lanterns. Unfortunately, this practice comes with an environmental cost, introduces a lot of unnecessary waste and promotes a throwaway culture.
With that in mind, I decided to create a workshop that repurposes used cardboard and through a laser cutting process, enables children to transfer their drawings as cutouts on the lanterns. Children and educators attended the workshops in the Hong Kong hackerspace and during the Shenzhen Makerfaire, gaining valuable sustainability lessons and basic electronics skills.
